I am handling your request for a sy13116 mailing list. We can offer two sorts. 1/ A Majordomo list where you are the administrator of the list This allows you to make the list, open (anyone can join) or closed (only you can add remove people), set it as a moderated list where you must approve mail to the list otherwise it is send to you to approve. etc.etc.etc.. 2/ A system list where the sysprogs add and remove people to/from the mailing list on your behalf. When students leave they will then be automatically removed. We will also ask the University database for a list of students enrolled in the subject to add them whenever you feel this is required. Such a list is closed and unmoderated. Here is a copy of the blurb I send out before about majordomo. When you have decided which style you want please let me know. =======8<--------CUT HERE----------axes/crowbars permitted--------------- Anthony has installed a Mailing List Management System called "Majordomo" on citadel. It can be used by academic staff to create and maintain their own mailing lists. Common uses for academic staff include creating and maintaining a mailing list of the students in their courses, mailing lists regarding conferences etc. More detailed information about the system is available below. Please contact Anthony (A.Thyssen@cit.gu.edu.au) if you wish to set up a mailing list for yourself. Regards, Armaghan Ross Hoveydai =======8<--------CUT HERE------------------------------------------------ Majordomo is a mailing list management program which allows users from anywhere in the world to subscribe and unsubscribe to mailing lists served by this system. Requests are sent to majordomo via an email message containing the request (in the mail `body'; the subject line is ignored). The result is then sent back to the sender. The EMail address is majordomo@cit.gu.edu.au For information on the commands the users of majordomo can use please send an email message mail containing the single word ``help'' in the body of the mail message. List maintainers also control the lists remotely via mail messages to majordomo. These `control' requests require a password and are provided to list maintainers when a list is setup. I will available to assist staff in list maintenance if required. Mailing Lists on Majordomo can also have the following features... * Lists can have users subscribe or unsubscribe themselves automatically OR require the list maintainer to ``approve'' new members. * Mailing Lists can be optionally moderated. That is, all articles must be `approved' by the moderator before being sent out to users on the list. Moderation can also be done by someone other than the list maintainer, using a different password. * Lists are normally advertised by majordomo (via a `lists' request). However who can see the mailing list can be restricted to certain users or network domains (IE: CIT only mailing lists are possible) Staff members wishing to setup a mailing list are to contact "anthony" and with the following information: * Name of the mailing list (usually quite short) * An initial password for the list maintainer * A single line describing purpose of the list. (for the `lists' request) * The initial ``info'' to mail to new subscribers to the mail list * anything else about the list All of the above, except the name of the mailing list, can be modified by the list maintainer at any time after the mailing list is setup. At that time I'll mail the maintainer a document of how this is done and the extra maintainance commands to majordomo. For those interested: majordomo is written in perl and is currently version 1.92.
